Responsible for all the patient respiratory equipment education, patient evaluation, discharge planning and patient follow-up visits for all respiratory patients.


Performs patient assessments utilizing pulmonary diagnostics, blood gases, chest radiograph, hemodynamic values, laboratory values, and correlates blood gases and electrolytes. Performs basic bedside spirometry including peak expiratory flows.

Reviews patient's medical record to obtain necessary clinical information including patient history, lab results, and physician orders, and obtains medical history from patients.

Performs initial set-up and follow-up assessments, and identifies contraindications to therapy and/or procedures ordered and informs the ordering physician.

Provides medication treatments per physician order such as pressure breathing, mechanical ventilation, positive pressure breathing, aerosol therapy, medical gas administration, pulmonary drainage procedures, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Assesses patient's cardiopulmonary status adequately monitoring the patient for adverse reactions. Communicates with referral source and/or physician on change with patient care plan.

Documents patient information, diagnoses and objectives on the patient forms including the diagnosis, plan of care and discharge goals. Monitors and documents frequency of follow-up visits and changes in patient status.

Completes all necessary paperwork and documentation required by the agency and existing regulations, standards and/or guidelines in order to ensure compliance.

Cleans, maintains and ensures proper working of equipment, troubleshooting problems as necessary and identifying the need for service and/or repair.

Educates and instructs patients, family members and/or primary caregivers on correct technique and safe usage of all respiratory equipment. Acts as a resource for referrals on home respiratory therapy equipment, services and procedures.

Communicates with appropriate agency staff in regard to patient discharge planning.

Scheduled Hours

0800-1630 M-F with on call rotations for---- Holidays, weekends and weekdays.

Licenses & Certifications

Respiratory Care Practitioner license issued by the state of Wisconsin, and

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), or

Respiratory Therapist certification (CRT) issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), and

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required, and

A valid drivers license issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Degrees

Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy.

Required Functional Experience

Typically requires 2 years of experience in respiratory therapy within a hospital or home care environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Excellent communication, interpersonal and patient service skills to work effectively with physicians, patients and other staff members.Ability to pay close attention to detail and to work independently. Intermediate computer skills including ability to use word processing and application software.Must possess and provide proof of a valid Wisconsin Driver License and a registered, functional car with adequate insurance coverage.
